Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to implement a temporary ceasefire in the city of Oleshky, located in southern Ukraine, to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians. The ceasefire is set to begin on October 27, as announced by the White House, and will involve a pause in military operations to allow aid organizations to safely deliver essential supplies and assist residents in leaving the area.
Oleshky, which has been under Russian occupation since February 2022, is currently home to approximately 2,000 people who are facing severe shortages of food, clean water, and electricity. Reports indicate that some residents have resorted to eating weeds and boiled grass due to these dire conditions. In response, Ukrainian officials have been advocating for a humanitarian evacuation from Oleshky and surrounding settlements for several weeks.
The preparations for the ceasefire will include clearing mines from access roads, delivering food and medical supplies, and coordinating transportation for civilians wishing to evacuate. Evacuees will reportedly have the option to travel to either Russia or Ukraine, depending on their preference. This initiative comes after repeated calls from international organizations and officials for humanitarian access to the area.
Despite the agreement, there are ongoing concerns about the full implementation of the ceasefire and whether the aid will reach all residents in need. Meanwhile, hostilities continue elsewhere in Ukraine, with Russian forces launching further overnight attacks. The conflict persists as both nations consider participating in another round of US-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi in November, although significant disagreements remain over issues such as territorial control and Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
The situation in Oleshky underscores the continuing impact of the war on civilians, posing substantial challenges to international efforts aimed at securing safe evacuations and establishing a broader peace agreement.
