South African jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant contributions to promoting human rights, strengthening international law, and supporting peaceful conflict resolution. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Pillay for her extensive work in international justice, particularly highlighting her efforts during South Africa’s apartheid era and her leadership roles in international criminal tribunals and at the United Nations as high commissioner for human rights.

Pillay, who also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, gained attention when the commission’s report in September 2025 accused Israel of committing genocidal acts in Gaza. The report claimed that there was an intent to destroy Palestinians in the territory, a conclusion that Israel rejected, citing bias and criticizing Pillay after the Nobel announcement.

The Nobel Committee emphasized that Pillay’s career exemplifies how legal institutions and universal legal principles can prevent violence and resolve conflicts. Her independence and expertise have been credited with strengthening international law institutions. At 85, Pillay was attending a gathering of human rights lawyers and jurists in Nuremberg, Germany, when she received the news of her award. She expressed surprise and underscored the necessity of examining evidence and applying the law impartially.

Throughout her career, Pillay has held several prominent international positions, including as a judge on international criminal tribunals and involvement in proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa lauded the award, commending her dedication to peace, human dignity, and justice. Other human rights advocates have also acknowledged her role in advancing accountability for serious international crimes, such as genocide and sexual violence.

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Pillay not only honors her decades of work in international law but also draws attention to the critical role of legal institutions in safeguarding human rights and addressing allegations of atrocities worldwide.
