The significance of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan has been underscored by Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, as crucial for bolstering the island’s self-defense amid escalating military pressures from China. Yui highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities, noting that the island is increasing its defense spending and focusing on self-reliance rather than solely depending on external assistance.

A significant U.S. weapons package, valued at approximately $14 billion, is currently under review by the administration in Washington. This proposal has garnered substantial support from American lawmakers who argue that Taiwan’s defense requirements are becoming increasingly urgent in light of China’s growing military presence in the region.

Yui emphasized that the level of military support from the U.S. should be proportional to the threats faced by Taiwan, referencing the frequent military exercises, warship deployments, and aircraft operations conducted by China near the island. He reiterated Taiwan’s objective of safeguarding its security and maintaining its democratic system through robust defensive measures.

Officials in Washington have reiterated that the U.S. policy concerning Taiwan remains consistent, with ongoing support for Taiwan’s security being a key aspect of the bilateral relationship. Amid the regional tensions, Taiwan continues to express confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States.
