In a significant display of influence within the Republican Party, former President Donald Trump’s chosen candidate secured a victory in northern Kentucky’s primary elections, unseating incumbent Congressman Thomas Massie. Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, was handpicked by Trump to challenge Massie in Kentucky’s fourth congressional district. This outcome was viewed by Trump’s allies as a test of whether dissent still had a place in the current Republican landscape, given Massie’s history of opposing Trump on several issues.

Tuesday’s elections spanned six states, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, and Idaho, marking the largest primary event of the year. In Georgia, the gubernatorial race saw Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and billionaire Rick Jackson advancing to a runoff for the GOP nomination, leaving behind Brad Raffensperger, a known critic of Trump. The Republican nominee will face Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor, who secured the Democratic nomination. In Alabama, Trump ally Tommy Tuberville emerged victorious in the Republican primary for governor, with former Senator Doug Jones winning the Democratic nomination.

In Pennsylvania, voters selected candidates for key House races that could influence the November general election outcomes. Democrats also saw a shift with Chris Rabb, known for his anti-establishment stance, winning a primary that highlighted internal party struggles. Meanwhile, Trump further stirred party dynamics by endorsing Ken Paxton, Texas’ controversial attorney general, in a Senate primary runoff against John Cornyn, generating frustration within some Republican circles.

Massie, known for his libertarian views, had often clashed with Trump regarding military actions, fiscal policies, and the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Despite advocating for independence over party alignment, voters in his district decided that allegiance to Trump was paramount. Following his defeat, Massie acknowledged Gallrein’s victory and emphasized the importance of maintaining decency in politics, reflecting on legislative achievements like the Epstein Files Transparency Act during his tenure.

Gallrein, who pledged to align closely with Trump’s agenda, criticized Massie for allegedly suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome” and vowed to support the president’s initiatives. The primary in Kentucky’s fourth district became historically expensive, with $25.6 million spent on campaign advertising. Gallrein’s campaign portrayed Massie as out of step with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, even as Massie defended his adherence to principles Trump initially championed. Gallrein now enters the general election as a strong favorite in a district with a long-standing Republican history. Additionally, Trump-endorsed Andy Barr won a primary for Senate in Kentucky, set to replace retiring Senator Mitch McConnell.
