Google Revamps Search with AI and Reintroduces Smart Glasses

Google is set to revolutionize its search bar by incorporating advanced artificial intelligence, announced during its annual Google I/O developer conference. This enhancement will allow users to input more descriptive and conversational queries, closely resembling natural human interaction. The upgrade will also guide users to engage with Google’s chatbot, driven by their latest AI model, Gemini 3.5. This development aims to transform the Google Search experience, introducing visually enriched results and enabling users to interact with AI for tasks like creating calendar invites or spreadsheet plans.

Elizabeth Reid, who leads the Google Search product, described these changes as the most significant in the search engine’s nearly 30-year history. With the global rollout underway for both desktop and mobile platforms, users will notice a shift towards AI-enhanced summary responses rather than traditional link lists. However, the option to revert to the classic search format remains accessible through a “Web” tab. Over the past year, the introduction of an AI Mode, allowing users to chat with a Gemini-powered bot, has significantly increased chatbot-specific queries, doubling each quarter.

Josh Woodward, overseeing the Gemini AI’s development, outlined the ambition of creating a “universal assistant” that is both personal and proactive. Google reported that 900 million people engage with the Gemini app monthly, though this is still below the 900 million weekly users of ChatGPT. The integration of AI agents into Google’s widely used search platform signifies a shift from niche, tech-focused applications to broader consumer use. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans can now utilize “information agents” for detailed research and receive tailored summaries or action plans. A new feature, Gemini Spark, will integrate with users’ Google products to assist with research, shopping, and planning.

In addition to advancements in AI, Google is venturing back into the eyewear market with its “intelligent eyewear,” a collaboration with Samsung and eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. Set to launch in the fall, these glasses will respond to voice commands and capture media via built-in cameras. This move reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, with Meta already partnering with EssilorLuxottica to offer similar smart glasses. Google’s previous attempt, Google Glass, debuted in 2014 but faced ridicule and was discontinued. However, changing perceptions have renewed interest in this technology, with Google reportedly working on a second model, Project Aura, featuring an in-lens display.
