China and the United States have reached an agreement to reduce tariffs on a combined $60 billion worth of goods, marking a significant step in easing trade tensions between the two economic giants. The deal involves each country lowering tariffs on approximately $30 billion of non-sensitive goods, aiming to improve market access and foster better trade relations.
Under this agreement, China will reduce tariffs on various U.S. agricultural products, such as corn, wheat, sorghum, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, and seafood. Additionally, products like wood goods, cosmetics, and medical devices will also benefit from lower duties. This move is expected to help U.S. exporters increase their footprint in the Chinese market.
On the other side, the United States will cut tariffs on a range of Chinese goods, including small household appliances, tableware, blankets, toys, children’s car seats, and holiday decorations. This reduction aims to make these products more accessible to American consumers while potentially boosting trade volumes.
As part of the agreement, both nations have decided to extend their current trade truce by two months, now set to last until January 10. This extension is designed to provide additional time for negotiations on broader trade and economic issues, offering businesses a more predictable environment for planning and operations.
Ongoing discussions between the U.S. and China are expected to address various topics such as investment opportunities and trade barriers, with both sides looking to resolve concerns that companies have raised during previous talks.
